Web Services

A simple description of a web service is the mechanism whereby one machine can talk to another (e.g. using XML/SOAP).

Typical types of functionality our web services provide are as follows:-

• Mobile phones (e.g. PDAs) connect to a web service and send/receive data to and from a server
• A website connects to a web service to get marketing data about a customer
• A website connects to multiple web services to find the best price available for a product
• An external supplier will post customer purchase information to a database through a web service
